Quoting the large SCD:
Because they are photographs affixed to a cardboard backing the cards in the 1911 Pinkerton issue are
considered "true" cabinet cards.
Pinkerton, the parent company of Red Man tobacco and others issued these cards in exchange for coupons found in cigarette packages.
According to an original advertising sheet, some 376 different photos were available. A consumer could exchange 10 coupons for the card of his choice.
The photos available included players from the 16 major league teams plus teams from the minor league American Association, Southern Michigan Association and
probably others.
Pinkertons vary in both size and type of mount. The most desirable combination is a 3-3/8" X 5-1/2" photograph affixed to a thick cardboard mount measuring approximately 4-3/4" X 7-3/4". (The two offered here have those measurements). Baker is quite a desirable hall of famer, both of these cards are extremely rare. Both of these cards received a grade of 10 by SGC most likely based on the tack hole that is in the cabinet, not the photo on each one. These are consignment item and we are looking for the best offers as follows: PLANK over $2,000 BAKER over $1,000 |
