Jackie was the first African American baseball player to play in the Major Leagues on April 15, 1947 starting at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie Robinson was known for his character and nonviolent approach to the constant threats and harrassment he received on and off the field. Winner of baseballs Most Valuable Player award in 1949, Jackie helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. In 1997 Major League baseball universally retired his uniform number "42". Jackie Robinson Day was declared by baseball beginning on April 15, 2004 where every player on every team wears number 42 as a tribute.
